How public employee tribunal outcomes could affect your business

Disgruntled employees can be extremely damaging. Whether claims are valid or not, the negative experiences of ex-employees can paint your business in a bad light to prospective customers and employees.

Social and online media has enhanced the reach of these claims which, in theory, could increase the amount of damage done to your reputation. However, most of us know to take some of what we read on the internet with a pinch of salt.

But what if the information is from a completely credible source? And, worse still, what if the claims are proven valid?

Well, recent changes to the way employee tribunals are handled has made this a reality – for all business.

The HM Courts and Tribunal Service has recently begun publishing the outcomes of employee tribunals online for the public to access. This means that if an employee has raised a formal dispute against your business, the outcome will be there for all to access – including savvy future employees.

So, what does this mean for business owners?

The answer is simple; continue to treat your employees fairly at all times. It goes without saying that, as an employer, the wellbeing of your people should always be your number one priority. The only difference now is that publicised tribunals will be there to expose those who neglect to do so.

Not only would this type of exposure damage your reputation, but it could also adversely affect your ability to attract new employees, as in-demand candidates may be put off joining an organisation with a record of negative tribunal outcomes.

Businesses of any size can experience internal difficulties, but there are plenty of ways you can ensure your employees remain supported, starting with the basics like good communication. As we’ve previously discussed, an effective communications strategy helps your employees to feel informed and able to speak out if necessary.

Ultimately, avoiding disputes depends on the culture of your organisation. Clear roles and responsibilities combined with regular reviews helps create a supported, cohesive team who know what’s expected of them.  This is by far the most effective strategy for ensuring every employee is treated with the respect that they deserve – helping to prevent anyone from slipping through the net.
